Camperdown is an attractive rural service centre of 3500 people located at the foot of Mount Leura, 193 km south-west of Melbourne on the Princes Highway.
It is distinguished by a fine 2-km avenue of elms along the main street and is situated on the world's third-largest volcanic plain which is dotted with volcanic cones (Mount Leura being the largest in the local area) and numerous lakes which have formed in volcanic craters. The various locations on the craters make this an ideal spot for slope soaring given that all wind directions can be flown in short proximity.
